How to Set Up a Birth Pool: A Step-by-Step Guide

Setting up a birth pool can create a serene and comfortable environment for labor and delivery without increasing risk for baby or mom! Studies note:

  • Less use of Pitocin® to speed up labor.

  • Less use of injectable opioids for pain management.

  • Less use of epidurals.

  • Reduced pain levels.

  • Higher rates of intact perineum (positive outcome), but only in obstetric settings; in midwifery settings there were no differences between groups.

  • Lower rates of episiotomy.

  • Lower risk of postpartum hemorrhage.

  • Lower rates of maternal infection.

  • Higher rates of maternal satisfaction.

So here’s how to get your birth pool set up properly!!

1. Choose the Right Location

• Space: Ensure you have enough room for the pool, as well as for caregivers and support people to walk around the pool from every angle.

• Access to Water: Choose a location close to a water source for filling the pool. This can be a washer water line, kitchen sink or even a shower head.

• Privacy: Ensure the area is private and quiet, promoting relaxation.

2. Gather Your Supplies

• Birth Pool: Choose a pool designed for birthing, preferably with a comfortable depth (water line to top of your belly when sitting) and soft sides.

• Hose: For filling the pool with water, make sure it’s long enough to reach your water source.

• Water Heater: If your water heater isn’t large enough, consider using a portable water heater to maintain the right temperature.

• Pump: A submersible pump can help with draining the pool after use. Some birth pools you rent may come with this so check with your birth pool supplier.

• Towels and Linens: Have plenty of clean towels for comfort and warmth.

3. Prepare the Pool

• Inflate the Pool 75%: If using an inflatable birth pool, inflate it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

• Place pool liner: Once pool is 75% inflated, place the pool liner in and secure it over the top edge of pool. Then finish inflation and the liner will be nice and snug how you want it!

• Check for Leaks: Ensure there are no leaks before filling the pool.

4. Fill the Pool with Water

• Temperature: Fill the pool with water between 95°F and 100°F (35°C to 38°C) for optimal comfort. Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature.

• Depth: Fill the pool to a comfortable level.

5. Set Up the Surrounding Area

• Comfort Items: Arrange pillows, blankets, a fan, cool wash cloths, water bottle, (poop net) and other comfort items nearby.

• Lighting: Use soft lighting, such as lamps or candles, to create a calming atmosphere.

• Safety Supplies: Keep a first aid kit, towels, and any necessary medical supplies like your birth supply box, close at hand.

6. Test the Setup

• Comfort Check: Spend a few moments in the pool to ensure it’s comfortable and meets your needs.

• Adjustments: Make any necessary adjustments to the water level or temperature.

7. Prepare for Use

• Create a Relaxing Atmosphere: Play soothing music or use aromatherapy to enhance the experience.

• Communicate with Support: Ensure your birthing team is aware of the setup and any preferences you have.

In conclusion, setting up a birth pool can significantly enhance your labor experience, providing comfort and relaxation. With careful planning and attention to detail, you can create a peaceful environment that supports your birthing journey. Remember to consult with your healthcare provider to ensure a safe and effective water birth setup tailored to your specific needs.
